DAY 8
Today's jewel is actually about cultivating delight.
No I haven't made a mistake. Gratitude is all about recognising our feelings of delight and in doing that, we cultivate more.
I'm not talking here about the the big, thank you God gratitude for the good health of loved ones or exam success etc. Those deserve a prayerful thank you to 'On-High' if that is your faith. Nor is it about remembering to send a thank you note to a kind host or gift giver - your own good nature knows that it's polite and respectful .
What I'm talking about today is feeling gratitude right in the moment of pleasure or delight. Being in touch with an attitude of gratitude so that you are truly in touch with your own feeling and experiences of these all the time.
But to do this you have to unlearn your fear of lack.
Joy, pleasure, charm, delight is limitless. Think about that. What stops us from being aware of these lovely things in our lives is our attachment to 'portion control'. That there's only so much to go around. That if you're happy, someone else must be miserable. That if today is good, tomorrow is pay-back time. Often when we are experiencing absolute pleasure, we are also, at the same time, experiencing a distant sense of dread, that this won't last.
Let me repeat, there is no limit to beauty or love or joy and the way to access unlimited supplies is to notice and lean into the feeling of these. You can access these things any time you choose. If you note where you found them in the past, you'll know where they are when you want more.
The funny thing about delight is that the more you focus on how much of it there is in your life, the more it finds its way to you.
These daily Jewels are about you and we're concentrating on mining for our inner sparkle - getting to know more about ourselves and what lights us up and brings real meaning to our lives. Thriving and flourishing more. Shining more. And bringing MORE YOU to the pages of your 2018 journal.
The best way to focus on gratitude is to keep a diary or journal and jot down a few things each day. Keeping one by the bed is considered a good way to manage this and knowing you'll be doing this at bedtime helps you focus on even the simplest pleasure as it arises during the day.
The other suggestion is to get yourself a gorgeous 2018 planner and set aside a place each day for putting down notes on gratitude. Putting this on your daily schedule means you can't miss it.
Over time you see a pattern and get a clearer picture of what truly delights your senses - allowing you schedule for it more.
Here's a few of mine from yesterday:
The aroma wafting from my slow cooker knowing the family meal is taking care of itself.
Feeling my skin drinking in a deeply nourishing moisturiser.
Realising the nagging pain in my shoulder has completely gone.
The fragrant scent from a lone blossom on a winter-bare tree as the morning sun hits it, as I'm out for my walk.
Slept well.
So Pens at the ready!
place the word GRATITUDE at the top of a new page (of your jewels notebook). What does gratitude feel like to you. Surprise, delight, love, blessed, free, complete, honoured, treasured perhaps?
What exercise of gratitude journaling suits you best? A notebook by the bed? An app on your phone? A diary or daily planner?
Your notes don't have to be long or descriptive - just a few words will do.
Examples:
Walk in park - daffodils pushing through.
Quick appointment at the surgery - lovely receptionist.
Sweet melon and parma ham for lunch - Italy!
Manicure - love my nails.
My ancient cashmere cardigan - holey, but still so cosy.
Coffee with bestie - laughed!
The thing you notice about feeling gratitude and making a note of it, is that pretty soon, you have more and more moments of simple pleasure and delight flowing towards you.
So grateful for your company on this jewel quest.

DAY 9
I want to let you in on a secret.
Each night as I go to bed, I have no idea what the subject of the following day's jewel will be.
I wait until morning and I know without a shadow of a doubt that the jewel will present itself to me as I sit at my desk and begin to design the graphic (Jewel pic.) The word, message and content seems to flow.
It's not an accident though. I've set the intention as I am about to sleep that when I wake, I will have all I need available to me and everything is taken care of. I trust and let go.
Today is a good day to tell you this because the subject turns out to be DREAMS. This jewel in truth, is a trinity.
Rest - Sleep - Dreams. These are the foundation of the health of our entire being. Of our Mind - Body - Spirit.
When this foundation is neglected we are running on empty and wearing down our life force. We are quite literally wearing ourselves out.
MIND - It needs to rest from the daily bombardment of stress, pressure and anxiety. We need to 'take our mind off things" so that it can graze on fresh pastures for a while.
BODY - Our bodies must sleep and current research is showing that sleep is crucial to preventing and combatting many of the serious health conditions we can suffer. Sleep allows our body the opportunity to clear the accumulation of the stress hormones that cause the inflammatory process that leads to disease. Making good quality sleep a priority allows you to step back so that you can leap forward the next day.
WHAT DREAMS MAY COME
In sleep we download, we upload, we reboot and send to trash so that we can waken up clear in mind and refreshed in body.
Oh but what of dreams?
Most intuitive or inspired discoveries are found in your subconscious and the quickest way to access that is in your dreams. Many inventors have woken from a dream with the missing piece for completion of their design or concept. Thomas Eddison took short naps or trips into his subconscious mind. There he fully expected to access ideas and indeed, he very often did.
Paul McCartney woke from a dream with the entire of 'Yesterday' playing in his mind. It was so clear that he believed he had actually memorised it from another source.
In dreams we can safely explore new ideas and experiences. I have a friend who had been taking swimmings lessons for almost two seasons and as each of the other students developed confidence and had let go of the sidebar, my friend could not release her grip. She simply couldn't trust the water to hold her afloat.
One night she dreamed she gently floated out from the bar and experienced the amazing feeling of flotation for the first time. So beautiful was this feeling, she dreamed the whole night away in the warm pool swimming from one side to the other. The next morning as she woke up, it dawned on her that now she had felt the feeling of floating, she knew how to swim. At next class she refused all buoyancy aids and immediately pushed off, swimming with grace and confidence to the opposite side of the pool. The amazed instructor called out "what happened?" "I dreamed it" my friend replied.
A GOOD DAY BEGINS THE NIGHT BEFORE
So says Arianna Huffington, author of The Sleep Revolution. So set your intention the night before and just before falling asleep ask yourself how would it feel if everything worked out well. Dr. Wayne Dyer says to keep the following quote beside your bed and read it every night as you lay down to sleep:
"I am using these moments to review what I intend to manifest in my life"
He says that the words 'I AM' are very powerful because what follows them is coming towards you. Keep the words positive and allow yourself feel the feelings of the wish fulfilled.
DREAMY NOTES
Under the word DREAMS in your notebook, write
REST - SLEEP - DREAMS leads to healthy MIND - BODY - SPIRIT
This jewel is the foundation of everything which supports good mental, physical and spiritual health.
How do you rest your mind? How does it feel when your mind is calm, refreshed and anxiety free? What can you do with that new energy?
What is your sleep routine? Do you get 8 hours nightly? How do you feel after a good night's sleep? How can you create a schedule and routine for sleep?
Create an environment to entice your dreams into reality. Write out the Dr. Dyer affirmation above and place it by your bed. How do you feel in your body and in your mind to have everything turn out exactly as you wished? When you sleep, what dreams come? Make a note of your dreams, you never know where they will lead you.
Sweet dreams,

DAY 10
Inspiration is defined as a 'sudden brilliant or timely idea' that moves you to do or feel something.
I want to share with you a wonderful story which illustrates that so perfectly, it will make you wonder.
The ninety year old American poet Ruth Stone was explaining to the author Elizabeth Gilbert, her extraordinary creative process. "When I was a child growing up on a farm in rural Virginia, I would be out on the farm working the fields and I would hear a poem coming towards me - rushing across the landscape like a galloping horse."
Whenever this happened, Ruth knew exactly what she must do next. "I would run like hell towards the house, trying to stay ahead of the poem, hoping to get a piece of paper and a pencil fast enough to catch it" she explained. When the poem reached her, and passed through her, she would be able to grab it and take dictation, letting the words pour onto the page.
Sometimes Ruth was too slow and she couldn't get to the paper and pencil on time. "In those times I could feel the poem rushing through my body and out the other side." It would be in her for a moment seeking a response, and then it would be gone before she could grasp it - galloping away across the earth, as she said "searching for another poet."
Here's the wildest part though.
Sometimes she would nearly miss the poem, but not quite. She would just barely catch it, as she put it "by the tail, like grabbing a tiger". On these occasions she would almost physically pull the poem back in to her with one hand, even as she was taking dictation with the other. In these instances, the poem would appear on the page from the last word to the first - backwards but otherwise intact!
What a powerful jewel INSPIRATION can be. A bold, brilliant, beautiful expression of your inner spirit.
The wonder of Inspiration is that it's really drawing out from within you what is already and always there. It's the magic ingredient to allowing your own brilliance reveal itself and to fill you with with enthusiasm to be, do and express this part of you that makes you feel more alive, complete and more fully you.
My late Grandmother was and is, very much an inspiration to me. How she loved, bore herself with grace, expressed her creativity, her humour and a special inner glow she carried about her all touched my own inner being. Whenever I need to access wisdom or direction, I think of her and my spirit rises. It never fails.
Inspirational Notes
Beneath INSPIRATION on your new page make a note of something or someone who inspired you in any area of your life you choose. Your career, parenting, relationships, creative outlets, passions or interests and anything else you can think of.
Did 'Strictly' inspire you to take up dance lessons? Or Nigella inspire you to bake a showstopper chocolate cake?
I often find films are a source of inspiration (which I imagine is the hope of the producers) and of course I was for the nunnery after watching the film Ben Hur for the first time!
What does inspiration feel like to you? Electrifying? butterflies in your tummy? enthusiasm?
How can you encourage more of this into your life?
Remember the trick is to act on it - otherwise you're letting the tiger move on before you can grab it by the tail!
Have an inspiring day,

DAY 11
Today's jewel is NOW.
Now is the keeper of time. it knows where it is when we ask "where has the time gone?" It knows you can't 'get time', because you already have it. Time can't run away from you and you can't let it slip. Because now is the time.
So often here's what happens. We have life and maybe a family and we have a plan to make a great life for the family. We create a source of income so that we can bring great things to our life and family. But what's the plan really?
Storytime.
A rich man is on vacation, lying on a beautiful beach in Mexico. His attention is drawn to a man who comes to shore and climbs out of his row boat with a bucket full of fish he has caught. His children run toward him greeting him with squeals of delight and helping him pull the row boat on to the sand. His wife waves to him as she sets out a table with fruit and breads as the man makes a fire on a circle of stones. He guts and cleans the fish as his children marvel at the colours of the fish scales and they skim stones and splash about in the water while the fish cooks on the hot stones. Later the man and his wife murmer contented conversation as they watch the children roll and chase about and after a while they pack up their picnic and the happy family head home together to their small cottage nearby and the sun sinks into the horizon.
Each day the rich man witnesses the same ritual and eventually he strikes up a conversation with the fisherman. "I see you spend a number of hours every day out fishing for your family's evening meal." "Yes" replies the fisherman. "We have abundant stocks of the most delicious, nutritious, fish swimming in these waters and my family can't get enough of it." "But do you know" says the rich man, "that in a few years you could be wealthy like me? You could raise a small investment and buy two more boats. Hire some young men and catch many more times fish." "Well, what would I do then?" the fisherman asks. "Well, you can sell the fish to all the restaurants along the coast and they will pay you a lot of money for it." "And what would I do then?" the fisherman asks again. "Well, then you could get more investors, buy a fleet of trawlers, hire more men, stay out longer, catch more fish, have it ready prepared for market and sell it to a chain of supermarkets." The rich man smiled at the genius of it all. "And then what?" the fisherman asks one more time. "Well, then you pay back all you investors and you're a rich man! You could take your family on wonderful holidays to beautiful places like I do. You can do what you like - take a boat out fishing all day and watch the sun setting with your family knowing they are living a good life." " ......But I have all that now." replies the fisherman with a smile.
When I was younger, chasing my tail to tick off the to-do list embedded in my mind's eye, it was very trendy to talk about 'quality' time. If we covered all the 'busy' work we could get a slot or window for some brief, but quality time. But what I discovered is that it doesn't matter if it's quality or otherwise so long as we're present in the moment. You can't schedule for real pleasure because pleasure can occur at any given moment. It can take you by surprise, so don't risk missing it because it's not on the schedule. Pleasure and joy don't know it's been scheduled for quality time...........when this or that has been addressed.
Today, don't worry about 'making time for all the good things' - JUST TAKE IT NOW! Now is all there is.
Right now, time for sparkly notes
Write NOW at the top of a new page. This page is very important because what you write here often leads you to your heart's desire.
If you had all the money in the world and nothing to fear, what would you be doing right now?
Fill in the blanks:
As soon as I do .........................., I'll spend time.............................
I'll be happy when ............................................................................
If only I could..............................., I'd be .........................................
NOW is the jewel in your crown, because it is all you have.
What can you do to harness the power of now and take one small step closer to the future you have promised yourself?
Nothing happens in your future or in your past. It only ever happens now. NOW, is all there is.
Time to go fishing!

DAY 12
Today's Jewel is ENERGY and as our physical body is heavily influenced by our thoughts and emotions, the energy generated by these can directly affect our health and wellbeing.
Our bodies are made of layers of vibrating energy. Our energy field. And when this is in balance we experience a sense of harmony and wellbeing.
Sometimes though, our baggage of limiting beliefs and restrictive thought patterns can lower our energy vibration and create dense or blocked energy in the energy field.
The strongest message on ENERGY (or vibes) I have ever received was from a story I heard some time ago. The image stuck in my mind and reminds me of my responsibility for the power of the energy I carry around me.
A young woman was very seriously ill with cancer and treatment was failing. Her prognosis wasn't good. She asked her partner to create a circle of people who would support her medical team in creating the best possible environment for her healing.
She had friends who were yoga masters and complementary therapists and healers and, as she was a woman of religious faith, prayer circles were set up too. These along with the best medical professionals possible were her Dream Team. She made another instruction and she asked that a notice be placed on the door to her room. "YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ENRGY YOU BRING INTO THIS ROOM."
As each of her carers, nurses, doctors and loved ones came to her room, they would stop before entering and clear their minds of anything but the highest possible energy focused on raising the levels of positive healing energy around the patient. All other concerns were left outside.
Far from being troubled or under extra strain, the staff found this notice liberating and visitors to the room reported that they loved coming into it because "the energy was so beautiful in there."
And I'm glad to say, in this instance, the young woman recovered.
Once we accept that we are responsible for the energy we "bring to this room" we become more aware of our thinking and of how we feel. We notice shifts in our energy. We feel our vibrational energy speed up as we rise to anger. We glow with a light radiant energy when we are feeling loved or loving. Our energy can emit warmth when we are in friendly connection or stay cool and calm when we need to be in control of a situation.
So today's Jewel brings you the gift of knowing that you get to choose the energy you bring to the room. And leave the responsibility to others for the energy they bring to the room too.
So, with this in mind, what energy do you choose to bring to this cold, January weekend. Warmth? Cleansing? Restful and calm or maybe Adventurous?
You can ratchet it up several notches I believe by having a good laugh with friends. Very healing that!
VIBRANT ENERGY NOTEBOOKS AT THE READY
ENERGY is the heading on today's clean page.
And the questions are simple.
If you are responsible for the energy you bring to the room, what kind of energy do you most wish to radiate?
Where and with whom are you most likely to find that same energy?
I hope you're picking up good vibrations today.

DAY 13
Some of you may identify with me when I say, I miss the light in this month of January.
The tinsel and fairylight sparkle of the Christmas season is over and we often sit-it-out through January - or hibernate. I find even a short walk in the daylight hours, is enough to raise my spirits and absorb some vital vitamin D. The light raises my energy levels and the chill wind puts sparkles in my eyes!
So when I thought about LIGHT for today's jewel, it dawned on me that without light, a jewel cannot be seen in all its true beauty. It's only when a jewel catches the light that can we see the unique iridescent lustre of all its many facets.
Finding light seems to be as vital to our own life force as air or water is to our physical body. 'Hiding our light' by feeling unworthy or undeserving, or allowing fear rule our lives, only serves to keep us in the shadows. We need to stand in the light to see who we truly are - our strengths, our depth, our splendour.
We say we are guided by light, lit up with purpose, delighted by all the wonder of our world, enlightened by brilliance.
We lighten up when we sink too deep or are weighed down.
We radiate - love, warmth, humour.
We shine.
Our loves are the light of our lives and people we enjoy are rays of sunshine.
And we look to highlights for clarity or to reveal more.
Being delighted is when you, or some external source, makes a connection with the source of joy within you and reveals to you, a new pleasure.
When we radiate this joy and pleasure, we experience being the source of light. We glow, we sparkle, or in the words of Rhianna we - Shine bright like a diamond!
In her book, “What I know for sure”, Oprah Winfrey tells the story of John Diaz who was a passenger on board Singapore Airlines flight 006 when it exploded on takeoff. Typhoon conditions reduced visibility and the pilot turned down the wrong runway crashing into a construction barrier. John Diaz said he felt a small bump followed by a huge bump and then he felt the motion of rolling and spinning before the plane stopped. Then a loud explosion filled his ears and a fireball shot through the plane.
John managed to unbuckle himself and looked around. In that moment he says he felt the hand of divine intervention. He looked for the door and placing his leather bag over his head to protect himself from the smoke and flames, he kept moving towards it.
Diaz recalled that as he looked back into the burning plane, he saw light, ‘like auras’ leaving the bodies of those who had perished. “Some were brighter than others…………I thought the brightness and the dimness were how one lives one's life”. He says that seeing these auras or 'energy of light' leaving the bodies and floating above the flames - changed him, and made him a more empathetic person. He says “I want to live my life so my aura, when it leaves, is very bright”.
We are BEINGS OF LIGHT.
And how can we find light, enlightenment, or delight?
Author of “Finding your own North Star” Martha Beck says that it’s inside you. Your guiding compass, your true north, your guiding light, is within you.
She says to start simple and ask yourself some questions.
Write down three things.
(1) What are your values or what do you believe in / know to be true.
(2) Once you’re clear on your values, how aligned do you feel you are with these?
(3) Do you have opportunities to feel guided, illuminated and fulfilled by your north star?
TIME TO SEE THE LIGHT
Place the word LIGHT at the top of the page. Now write down the following:
Who do you know is a ray of sunshine?
What activity or purpose 'lights you up'? Take your time with this because it highlights what makes you feel good and allows you shine.
What is your greatest source of enlightenment? - books? google? family or friends?
Do you have a role model whose example you follow?
How does it feel to be 'in the light'?
If you find yourself slipping into the shadow through feeling fearful about something or feeling small or vulnerable, who can you rely on to show you the way?
What small action can you take daily that makes sure you have a light-filled day?
Remember. Being delighted is when you or some external source, makes a connection with the source of joy within you and reveals to you, a new pleasure. More please!
On that note, I wish you a delightful day 13 and many more.

Day 14
Ahhhhhhh! Blessed Relief. Let Go. Detach. Surrender. Unbridle. Unhook. Unburden. Liberate.
All these are facets of today's jewel, RELEASE.
Mike Dooley, author of 'Leveraging the Universe', says that in order to get where we want to go or have what we want to have, we have to be willing to release ourselves from the commitment to a chosen path and change what we're doing or thinking.
If you want to have more excitement, more career opportunities, more friends, more wealth, better appearance, healthier, happier (you get the picture) - doing things exactly as you've always done them isn't going to change a thing. You'll just get more of the same results. He says you have to be prepared to let go of the way you've always done things to produce a different result if that's what you want.
Mike says - "Don't be afraid to go where you've never been, and do what you've never done. Because both are necessary to have what you've never had, and be who you've never been".
It takes real courage to release our hold on what we thought was working, keeping us safe and protecting our interests. But very often we will find that these ideas are inherited, from our family, our peers, our social identity. "Better the devil you know!" is the warning most of us grew up with and if we're inclined to doubt ourselves, the well worn track, where many have gone before, is the safest route.
The poet Jack Gilbert says 'We must RISK delight". We have to be prepared to risk change as we grow and evolve so that we can delight ourselves with new adventures and fresh pastures. In order to do this we must release our attachment to the familiar.
Wanting everything as it always was only restricts us, narrows our focus and attaches us to the past. It is natural to feel a sense of loss or even grief when changes in our lives occur - our children leaving home, broken relationships, losing loved ones, lost opportunities, retirement or job loss. Replaying memories of happy times can be comforting and familiar but constant rumination will keep you stuck.
So let me ask you today, do you feel stuck?
Is there any life area you feel there must be more? In relationships? occupation? body image? finances? wellness of mind/body/spirit?
It's time for a change and there's no time like the present.
(Remember the glorious jewel of day 11? NOW is all there is).
Time to release your attachment to an old way of thinking or being.
Maybe you're a perfect mum/parent figure, your kids are happy but you feel something's missing.
You have a wonderful job, money is good, you're highly skilled, but it's not satisfying you.
You have a great home, super job, but you feel drained all the time.
You have time, you own your own home, plenty of security and no restrictions but somehow you feel "Is that all there is?".
You feel undervalued, your self-esteem could do with a boost, you've given good years to others and it's your turn now.
TIME TO RISK DELIGHT. TO GO WHERE YOU'VE NEVER BEEN. TO DO WHAT YOU'VE NEVER DONE.
Pen and notebook time!
Here is a list of ten things you need to release yourself from if you want happiness. As you write each one down think about how much control each of these has over your life. How would it feel to release yourself from each of the following - and what would it leave you free to do?
1. Limiting Beliefs (I'm not good/clever/rich enough. I'm too old. It's too late)
2. Dwelling on the past
3. Worrying about the future
4. The need to impress others
5. Complaining
6. Negative self talk
7. The need to always be right
8. Resistance to change
9. Blaming others
10. The need for approval of others.
What small steps can you take right now to begin to let go of any of the above?
Remember this is the year you begin to deliver your 'One Day' promises to yourself, one day at a time, so that 'One Day' becomes Every Day.
