DAY 22
It's time to SHINE and show the world our inner sparkle. I think it's summed up in this Dr. Seuss quote:
" Today you are you, that's truer than true.
There's no one alive, who is you-er than you."
And how much time, effort and expense do we get through trying to make ourselves acceptable or normal. If Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela or Mother Theresa had kept their inner light a little secret to themselves for fear of not seeming normal or being unusual, the world would be a very different place today. We accept that there is no one alive that is 'you-er than you', that we are all unique and yet, we live in mortal terror of exposing our uniqueness and allowing ourselves shine.
Why are we so afraid?
Well, we're afraid of being judged. If we put ourselves out there, we risk the opinion of others. As the late Dr Wayne Dyer said 'the opinion of others is none of your business'. Their opinion of you is all about them and nothing about you,
We fear failure. I've begun to see that failure proves you are living. If something doesn't work out the way you'd hoped or planned, then you are more on the right track than you were before. Not doing or being, for fear of failure is just static, and static is just failure without the energy.
Change is uncomfortable. When you decide to take steps towards your dreams and goals, this is when you get closer to being truer than true and you-er than you. It's a bit scary as you worry that you may not have the resources, that you may be inadequate, that you will get lost in the new terrain in which you find yourself. The answer to this is to take small steps and break the journey.
Dr Dyer had a phrase he liked to use to encourage living a fulfilled life. "Don't die with your music still inside you". He believed that our uniqueness was like our own piece of music or song we're each born with, and throughout our lives we need to deliver this music to the world otherwise we take it back to the world of spirit unreleased and unexpressed.
On one occasion he was taking calls during a radio talk show. A woman shared with him that she was deeply unhappy in her job as a teacher.
"I dearly wish I'd studied medicine when I went to college" she said and explained that she had really wanted to be a doctor but her parents pushed her to train as a teacher instead. Dr. Dyer asked her why she couldn't study medicine now.
"Oh it's too late now" she said, "I've been a teacher for over 25 years!"
"Well, how long does it take to become a doctor?" Dr. Dyer asked her.
"Seven years" she answered.
"And what age will you be in seven years time?" he further enquired.
"I'll be 56", she answered again.
"Well, whaddaya wanna be?" he cried. "A happy 56 year old doctor or a miserable 56 year old school teacher?".
And really that's it. It's NEVER too late to shine!!
It's all about choices and the courage to make changes regardless of your fear of the opinion or judgement of others. You owe it to yourself and to the world to shine your unique light and express your unique talents.
The people who love you and care about you, really want this for you too. The great part of this is that you get to be the shining example to others when you go after your dream.
Don't die with your music still inside you. What you reveal to the world might just be the note for the symphony in someone else's heart. Their freedom to shine may well be dependent on you.
SHINY NOTEBOOK OPEN PLEASE
Place the word SHINE at the top of the page.
Underneath write out your greatest heart's desire.
What is it you wish to bring to this world more than anything else?
What is the music inside you?
Don't be afraid to embrace your weird! That bit of us we worry might be a bit too quirky and unusual. That's the good bit. We may think weird means not normal but what is considered normal changes all the time. Imagine what people would have thought of men cycling around in skin tight lycra, 50 years ago?
Today take out a lovely soft polish cloth and get ready to polish your shine! The world needs all the sparkle you can bring to it.
Have a super day.

DAY 23
"Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again" - Joseph Campbell
I've given today's essential jewel a couple of titles. I'm calling it the DOUBLE S.O.S.
Sanctuary and Sacred Space in this instance both mean the same thing. In some religious faiths, the sanctuary is the sacred space where those who took shelter could not be pursued. Sanctuary is your personal reserve or retreat.
Your definition of what is sacred is unique to you. It is what ever allows you connect with what's deeply important to you.
For those of you who believe that we are spiritual beings having a human experience, a sacred space allows you centre and connect with your inner being - your connection to the divine.
Your space my be a physical place you designate for sanctuary within your home or a designated corner of your garden or balcony. Or it can be a inner space which can be accessed anywhere by means of meditation or prayer or affirmation or any other means of instant connection, centering or grounding.
THE PURPOSE OF YOUR SACRED SPACE
This is a place within your busy life to call your own. It holds space for all that is important to your mind, body and spirit while you're busy living your life and attending to your daily activities.
Your sanctuary holds safely for you, everything that's important for you. A place of your own to keep things, tokens, photos, crystals, scented candles, a soft blanket and cushion, books, paper and pen, music, plants or flowers, pictures/photographs, The things which are touchstones of your blessings, hopes and dreams.
My own sanctuary is my old writing desk - on it I have crystals, scented candles, a small bell and an old ink pot. Nearby are books, pens and paper and some intuitive guidance decks. On the wall is a portrait of my grandmother. Her soft hazel eyes can bring me instant balance and grounding.
CREATE A SACRED SPACE OR SANCTUARY
Place today's jewel of SACRED SPACE OR SANCTUARY a the top of a new page.
Firstly you must do a very important act of self-care. You have to claim your space. It doesn't have to be a whole room. It can be a cosy corner, the top of a chest of drawers, even a window ledge. A sheltered corner of your garden is also a good place, especially if you are particularly drawn to the energy of the earth and a natural environment.
What kind of mood are you hoping to create? How do you want to feel? Calm? alone? peaceful? inspired? centered? spiritual? prayerful? rested? connected?
A peaceful and calm space might contain soft blankets, music, headphones, dimmed lighting, scented candles and cushions.
A creative space might be a place where you can read, write, craft or create, explore, play music and access your inner wisdom as well as allowing access to your inner-guidance or intuitiveness.
The sacred space may be somewhere you wish to access at any time. You can create space by simply breathing slowly and deeply (remember Jewel day 1). Close your eyes and continue to breathe slowly concentrating on each in breath and each out breath. Repeat an affirmation of your choice example 'I am safe and everything is working out for my highest good'.
You can also download apps such as Headspace which give you access to guided meditations on the go.
Remember, in your own sanctuary, you can ask for guidance or connect with your own inner-wisdom or higher self. Somewhere to breath deeply and create a positive vision for your life.
Today, claim your space. It's waiting for you....

DAY 24
"Don't ask yourself what the world needs.
Ask yourself what makes you come alive,
and then go and do that.
Because what the world needs is
people who have come alive"
- Harold Whitman
Today's Jewel is PURPOSE and I've purposely held this jewel over to the last week because I've been determined that you feel empowered by all of your jewels. That you will be prompted to spend a little time with all the wonders and treasure you have within yourself.
But somehow, we tend to over-labour the 'meaning of life' question. We tend to think we're supposed to have a great big purpose, meaningful in the eyes of the greater community. That only the likes of Sir David Attenborough or Bob Geldof ever really get to live on-purpose, highlighting causes and making others take notice.
From what I've observed though, people who have found their purpose are simply happy with who they are. They haven't gone chasing some great big meaningful life (although some do that very successfully), they have simply followed their heart.
And that's the thing, they followed their heart!
According to the Dali Lama (and he's as good as any to have an opinion), it's your very duty to follow your heart because the purpose of life is TO BE HAPPY. It can't be put more simply than that!
Follow your heart. You don't have to write books - just read them with an open mind and learn, grow, expand, share.
Follow your heart. You don't have to chain yourself to trees in the Amazon rainforests, but do grow your own beautiful garden. Share your knowledge, give presents of clippings, eat your own produce. Create an organic life, close to the earth and filled with growth.
Follow your heart. You want to heal and care and promote wellness. Explore conventional, alternative and complimentary medicine and bring a healing presence and energy to all the life around you. Be the example of the wellness you wish to generate.
Follow your heart. It will lead you in wonderful new directions as it expands and learns more about what excites you. So when you set a goal or ambition for yourself, don't be surprised when you feel pulled in a new direction as you advance along your path. This isn't changing or quitting. This is evolving.
The one thing I found is that PURPOSE is almost always something you bring forth from within. It's not something you can get, acquire or inherit. It won't have a better purpose if you are thinner, richer, younger, more attractive.
Sometimes your purpose shows itself to you when you have lived through an experience and want to share it with others.
Byron Katie suffered for years with crippling depression. Often spending days in her bedroom, one morning she had what she calls, 'her awakening'. She made the discovery that when she believed the thoughts in her head, she suffered. And when she didn't believe the thoughts in her head, she didn't suffer. She decided to turn everything around. She literally took negative thoughts and translated them into the positive - and chose to believe them. She didn't suffer. The more she did this exercise, the more she broke through the cycle of depression and eventually began to experience periods of happiness. As a result of her experience she discovered her purpose. To share her ' Work' or 'The Work of Byron Katie'.
My own 'UpStarts' positive living programmes arose as a result of a mid-life quest for understanding of this stage of transformation in a woman's life. Now my purpose is supporting women in midlife and beyond to step powerfully and consciously into their status of Wise and Ageless Goddess and living a creatively fulfilled life with purpose and meaning.
SOME NOTES ON PURPOSE
Place our jewel PURPOSE at the top of a new page and beneath it write "My purpose is to be happy and to follow my heart".
Since your heart is all about love, make a list of as many things you love under the following headings:
Colour, type of food, flower, author, type of music, day of the week, month of the year, season, people, style, tv show, film, animal, place to spend a day, holiday destination, hobby, pastime, actor, comedian, car, treat, perfume.........
Keep your list going.
Often when we ask the question of ourselves, what makes us happy, we have no idea. So here we are starting at the very beginning. Learn without having to think about it, what makes you happy.
Now write down what you're good at. Sometimes we are good at things we don't really like doing. You may be a great cook, but you don't really enjoy it. Be aware of the difference. Does doing what you're good at make you happy or are you doing it because you always have done?
What are your greatest passions or what makes you feel truly alive?
Follow your heart.
Do all those things that make you happy.
That lifts your spirits.
That gives you butterflies.
That you jump out of bed in the morning to get to.
I hope you're having a happy Wednesday.

DAY 25
Today's Jewel is TRIBE. Team, sisterhood, community or club are other terms for this jewel and it's a truly valuable one in more ways than we know.
In 'olden times' being a part of a tribe was a means of safety and of ensuring a thriving community. The punishment of stepping outside of the tribe, was to be ostracised and so the fear of abandonment or isolation kept order and control.
That fear of being put aside to this day, is the cause of so many people getting stuck in a rut. The millennial condition of F.O.M.O. (fear of missing out) is experienced on a large scale today and is why so many people stay glued to their mobile devices and social media communities.
Dr. Christiane Northrup, author of Goddess Never Age, says that 'Community is Immunity' and studies show that social isolation and loneliness is as potent a cause of an early death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
But it's not just having company that's important, it's your contribution to that company that counts. For example, it's really important to make contact with the very elderly by phone and visits etc. but it's even more important to allow them have a role in their group. It's feeling valued, that's important - genuine companionship.
SO WHO ARE YOU?
It's said that each of us is the average of the five people with whom we spend most of our time. So who are you hanging out with? The people you choose to spend time with is as important to you as how well you exercise or nourish yourself.
DRAINS AND RADIATORS
Ask yourself whether your companion is a drain or radiator. Drains suck your energy. They're generally in a negative frame of mind and don't mind dumping on you. You'll find yourself frowning a lot and feeling headachey and exhausted. Radiators have a positive effect on you and often leave you feeling inspired and uplifted. You find yourself smiling more in their company.
So, whilst it's vitally important to be part of a tribe of your choosing, it's also important to be aware of the kinds of people you chose to make up that tribe.
TRIBAL NOTES (OR BUILDING A DREAM TEAM)
Place the jewel TRIBE at the top of a new page and beneath it you are being asked to identify the people in your life who are supportive, and positive and will celebrate your successes. They are on your team. Look at the people around you. Write down their qualities and how each of them makes you feel.
Our tribe or team can be made up of the people around us who support us in many different ways. We have people with whom we have a relationship and those who support our health and wellbeing. Others are part of our personal development and still others who are members of our wider community. Here's a list of people who can make up your 'Dream Team' or Tribe.
This is just a suggested list but often once you start, you'll discover others that come to mind. (The local florist who is friendly and you love to chat to her about the Chelsea Flower Show). Friends of friends can come to mind too - write them down, everyone has something to offer.
Look at your list of people and their qualities. Answer the following questions.
Do you feel supported by them?
Do you find yourself weighing up your words around them or anxious to please them?
Are they interested in your plans and ambitions?
Do they help you see your strong points/ your good qualities?
Do they inspire you?
Are they drains or radiators?
Do they bring growth / connectedness / expansion to your world? I love animal lovers and artists and writers and healers and people who bring out the beauty in others. I'm a member of online communities bringing people from all over the world together with a common theme of positive living and personal growth.
ON MY TEAM
Is my own hairstylist Tracey whose beautiful salon, Athena is a place of healing and transformation - I truly believe it's a sacred space, a sanctuary (remember Jewel Day 23?). The energy she brings is of warmth, trust, beauty, compassion, friendship, inspiration, companionship, healing and radiance - all of the qualities I wish for in my tribe AND
In a tribe, sisterhood or team, as each member rises, all others rise with them.
Wishing you a lovely evening in good company.

DAY 26
Here's a truly beautiful and magnetic jewel, PLEASURE.
Other facets of this jewel are delight, happiness, joy and fulfilment.
"Pleasure is a divine gift to us. it should be a
discipline practiced regularly to establish happiness
and joy in your body. Sustainable pleasure is the
ultimate prescription for good health." - Dr. Christiane Northrup
It's an interesting observation that in book and film, when 'western woman' is exhausted, misunderstood and finds herself either talking to a wall (Shirley Valentine) or on the bathroom floor crying her eyes out at 3.00am (Eat, Pray, Love), she takes herself to countries where the people put real and simple pleasure above all else. In these instances a Greek Island, Italy and Bali.
Simple pleasure becomes so important when life gets complicated: Eating barbecued fresh caught fish. Savouring locally produced wines, fruits and cheeses. Having conversation with new people under the stars until well after the barbecue embers die down. Laughter. Licking dripping ice-cream from a cone while you bathe your feet in a piazza fountain. Feeling the warmth of the sun on bare skin. Inhaling the heady scent of bougainvillea through the open bedroom windows as you waken in the morning having slept deeply all night. Dancing tango with a handsome stranger. Moving, smiling, hearing of new ways to see things and seeing new ways to be things, opening, stretching, glowing....
Time stands still.
Your body moves to its own rhythm.
You feel beautiful and sensual.
You're in love with life and you feel fantastic.
All of these things are available to us most of the time. We don't have to go away to find pleasure. There's always something new to experience as if for the first time, even in our own country, city, town, county. We designate pleasure to holiday time and the rest of the time we 'put up with' our daily lives but we can turn our ordinary day into an entirely pleasurable one by making some simple changes.
We think that pleasure is to be reserved for rewarding good behaviour or having put up with an unpleasant experience - otherwise we should feel guilty. Making conscious pleasure a part of every day, makes us mellow and calm, it lifts our spirits and allows us think more clearly. Our drive is to share this good feeling too so that we radiate pleasure.
I had a very wise boss once who overhead me say I was looking forward to my holiday to be able to 'get away from' an awkward situation. His response was to tell me to deal with the situation before I go. He pointed out that being away gives you time and fresh perspective but when you return to the same set of circumstances, you are back to where you started - only wishing you had a holiday to 'get away to' all over again.
Arranging a pleasurable holiday or break is of course very good but 'saving'pleasure for holiday time is of no value at all. As my old boss says, it simply makes you 'wish you were there' when you return to your daily life.
PLEASURE IS OUR BIRTHRIGHT
Our bodies work very hard for us all the time. Our cells are constantly renewing themselves, our heart is constantly beating, our lungs are filing up with and releasing air all the time, our hands are tending to thousands of acts every day, our feet are keeping us forever upright or moving, our eyes, ears, nose and mouth are all seeing to their work on our behalf - don't they (your senses, your tissue, your bone and all your finely balanced systems, your mind, your heart, your body, your soul) deserve pleasure everyday. Don't save it for Friday nights and two weeks holiday out of the 52 weeks in the year.
There's proof that your life depends on it!!
AND HERE'S THE SCIENCE BIT*
On experiencing pleasure, cells in our brain, blood, blood vessels and lungs produce a signalling molecule or gas, called NITRIC OXYDE (or N.O.). Other sources which trigger N.O:- laughter, fruits and vegetables high in anti-oxidants, meditation and exercise (the sensation of runner's-high is attributed to the release of N.O.). The sensation of N.O. being released sets off a chain of other feel good chemicals in the body. You feel a shift in your energy and a sense of relaxation and calm. Nitric Oxide is the physical manifestation of the vital life force - the CHI or PRANA that animates our bodies.
NOTES ON PLEASURE
Turn over a whole new leaf and place the word PLEASURE at the very top of the page.
Beneath it write the words 'Pleasure is Power'. So what are you going to do about it? How can you include the powerful, vital life force that is pleasure into your daily life?
Well, firstly you have to get rid of the idea that pleasure is sinful or guilty. You must begin to prioritise pleasure in your day to day life.
IDEAL PLEASURABLE DAY
Today, take a 12 hour stretch of your 'everyday' and going over it, write down how it would run if everything was ideal and simply fell into place as you would wish. How would your home look as you waken in the morning? How do you feel? Awake, refreshed, excited to get on with your day? In your ideal day what do you have for breakfast? What do you choose to wear? What is your morning routine? How does your commute run? The people you meet and spend time with - how do you interact? Continue designing your ideal day - take as long as you like. Once you put some of these designs into practice, you're going to change your world!
Now remember that the experience of pleasure is so natural and organic that our very bodies are programmed to grow, repair and thrive on pleasure. So live in pleasure deliberately, and dance, move, sleep, savour, laugh, touch, connect, absorb, give, receive, create and prioritise pleasure every single day.
Have a super pleasurable day!

DAY 27
Today's Jewel is one we've all got plenty of. EXPERIENCE.
We all have things we know for sure because we've been there and the T-shirt is so well worn we can barely read the legend.
Experience is a great teacher.
I've loved the writer and speaker Maya Angelou since I was a schoolgirl. I'd pop home from school at lunchtime to watch 'Oprah' and Ms. Angelou was often a guest sharing her wonderful take on life. Her book, 'Singin' and swingin' and gettin' merry like Christmas', was a huge inspiration to me at that young age and I think it has to be the best title I've ever come across.
I recently came across a short list of things Ms. Angelou wrote that she learned in her life. Here they are:
"I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights. I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as 'making a life'. I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw some things back."
So tonight's post is short and sweet. What has experience taught you?
Pay attention to whether the lessons and beliefs are yours or whether they have been shaped by the experiences of others and passed on to you. Just because your Uncle Don believed "It's not what you know, it's who you know"doesn't mean it has to be your lesson or belief.
Begin to pay attention from now on, where you picked up your lessons. Were they formed by your own experiences or inherited from your family, community or culture.
Here are a few of mine:
I've learned it doesn't matter whose fault it is. The outcome of any situation will always depend on how you deal with it.
I've learned that a traffic jam can be untangled with a few simple directions. Don't imagine someone else is taking control.
I've learned that paying attention to other people makes you visible.
A destination is never a destination - it's nearly always en-route.
I've learned that contrary to the belief that as we get older, 'we get set in our ways', it's much easier to begin something new when you're older and the responsibilities of youth are no longer a factor.
I've learned that when you unhook yourself from the fear of the opinion of others, you lose the crippling fear that prevents so many from making their dreams come true and taking control of their own lives.
I've learned that if steak tartare is on the set menu and you don't like it, ask for a prawn cocktail - you'll nearly always get it! (Then watch the faces of everyone else in your party who wish they'd done that too).
I've learned that the people who love you really do want you to thrive.
I've learned to expect miracles and see the magic. This way you don't miss a thing and everything has the potential for wonder and delight. This way happiness lies!
NOTEBOOK TIME!
Place the jewel EXPERIENCE at the top of a new page.
Write the words What I have learned and follow it as often as you like with the lessons life has taught you. As this is the month of jewels try to keep your lessons in a positive vein. The lessons that sparkle and twinkle at you rather than dull your shine.
The exercise here is designed to help you realise how far you've come and how each of your experiences has shaped your life and is part of the story of you.
At the end of your exercise write three or four words that sum up your values and beliefs taken from your experiences and the things you have learned.
Some of mine are Flourish, Inspire, Optimism, Create.
Got it?
I hope you experience a charming Saturday evening.

DAY 28
Today's jewel is HEALING.
It's an empowering jewel and one which reminds us that being in charge of our own wellness is the foundation of good health in body and mind. We have the ability to heal ourselves of so much if we stay in touch with how we are feeling.
If we pay attention we can get to the cause of discomfort before it becomes a physical manifestation in our bodies. 'The weight of the world on our shoulders', can manifest in back or neck ache. Irritable bowel syndrome is often related to stress and anxiety etc.
I'm of the belief that we should all be in possession of an owner's manual on our lives. We have one for our car and almost every item in our homes but absolutely nothing to refer to when we need to 'look up' what to do when one or other of the amber or red lights come flashing up on our personal dashboard.
Amber and red lights spell fatigue, over-burdened, boredom, discomfort, low mood, despair, irritability, loneliness, pain, longing and many more areas of dispiritedness and even disease.
Let's be clear. If you are unwell in body or mind seek the advice of a doctor, consultant or therapist. This is the first step in empowerment. Talk, speak up, be clear about your symptoms and concerns. They can guide you and prescribe for you and give you advice but if you feel you are not being heard or understood, again, speak up! They may have all the specialist knowledge you need, but you are the expert on you. One size does not fit all so think of your consultations on your health as a partnership and then work together.
Here are some conditions you absolutely must do to enjoy wellness and positive good health.
Love yourself
Forgive yourself
Banish shame and guilt
Marianne Williamson (A Course in Miracles) says:
“We do not heal the past by dwelling there. We heal the past by living fully in the present”
Forgive yourself the things you wish you'd done better or the things you feel you should have done but didn't. Let go of the thinking of "I'm ashamed" or I feel guilty". It's time to release yourself - write it down if you have to and then burn it. Let it disolve into thin air.
The causes of wellness
Rest, nourish, move, choose, decide, discover, laugh, thank, create, love.
How do these causes of wellness work for you?
Rest: How can you arrange to have the eight hours sleep our bodies need for good health. Is your bedroom comfortable?
Nourishment: Do you eat well and pay attention to how your body reacts and uses the food you eat.
Movement: What kind of exercise is best for you? Are you a cardio workout type or is a stroll along the beach more to your liking. Enjoying what you do is important for your wellbeing along with the good health benefits of the exercise.
Control: Making decisions and choices and being in control of our own lives is important. Duties, responsibilities and obligations are a part of all our lives but making sure we are actively involved in the decision making and planning and have access to support is part of healthy living.
Laughter: It goes without saying - it's the best medicine. Even if you can't laugh, not taking yourself too seriously is always a good idea too. Having the weight of the world on your shoulders is often relieved by 'lightening up'.
Grateful: Be grateful for your good health and be aware of it. Acknowledge that your body is working well for you. That you are pain free. We often say that we only realise how wonderful it is to feel well, when we've been ill for a while. Don't wait to be ill. Saying thank you tells the universe, you are open to more of the same.
Create: Being involved in creating something, painting, baking, gardening, knitting, carpentry etc. is good for the soul. It allows you access another part of your being and lifts your spirits. These are the ways we loose track of time. What works for you?
Love: How do you show yourself love? What form of self-care is most pleasing to you? You'd be amazed how many people cannot answer this. Try spa treatments, aromatherapy massages, manicures etc.
Other forms of wellness maintenance
Meditation - try short guided meditations to begin with and then you can explore other options. There's no wrong way and all meditation is beneficial to mental and physical good health.
Affirmations - these are always positive and repeating an affirmation trains your mind to expect wellness and positive outcomes. Create your own by making a positive statement about your health and wellbeing and keep it in the present tense. "I am strong and well. Everything is always working out for me".
Breathing: - Learn to stay in the moment by stopping what you're doing for a short period while you concentrate on your breathing. Staying in the moment is easiest in this way and is calming and reduces anxiety. This reduces the stress hormones in our bodies and reinforces our sense of being in control of our own lives.
NOTES FOR YOUR OWNER'S MANUAL
Write the word HEALING at the top of a new page.
Treat this exercise as a means of reference for what you may choose to do at any given time depending on how you wish to support your wellness and wellbeing.
Going back over the areas of the causes of wellness above write down how many hours sleep you need to feel well rested in the morning. What is the best night time routine for you? shower/bath? hot drink? gratitude journal? light reading? etc..
Follow this on with foods that are vital for your good health and what you need to avoid. Continue on down through the other areas mentioned.
The book by the late Louise Hay 'You can heal your life' is a handy book on relating certain health conditions to discomfort and dis-ease within your spirit. It's a book on self empowerment of your own mind and body and there are many examples of daily affirmations and practices to support you.
You are responsible for your own good health so start building good practices into your every day. Start 'enjoying' good health.
Lastly remember a good relationship with your doctor is part of good health. See each other as equal partners in maintaining your wellness. You may not be the doctor, but you are the CEO of you.
Wishing you a happy and healthy good evening.

DAY 29
Today is day 29 of Jewels and we have had four full weeks of sparkle.
Each day we have had a chance to hold a single aspect of our lives up to the light and see for ourselves all the glitters and wonders within.
It's surprising how we can take for granted all the wealth of resources, wisdom and guidance of our inner compass operating in our lives all the time.
It’s no wonder we get frustrated, irritable and bored! We have all this incredible guidance and inner sparkle waiting for its moment to shine and we put so much energy into keeping the lid firmly shut on the treasure chest that contains them.
We have more power, choice, ease and flow than perhaps we could ever realise.
Today’s jewel is GIFTS and it’s twofold!
The first is to accept that you were born with a unique gift to deliver to this world to the benefit of all. Each of us has skills which we learn and we have talents which we develop with ease. But our gift is something supernatural. It's your divine responsibility to deliver this gift once you discover it.
The second part of today's jewel is that you are going to gift yourself regular opportunities to begin (and then continue) the things you promised yourself - one day.....
INTENTIONS:
We began this month with the intention that this year will be the year of:
- Putting the ‘one-day’ promises in everyday. Small action steps
- No resolutions! Instead gifting yourself opportunities
- Being more you. Shine bright like a diamond.
By the first of February, you will be ready to make your gift plan to yourself. It’s nearly spring, a time of new beginnings and growth. Is this a good time for you to make a start on a whole new year and not just another year?
Let’s recap on each of the 28 jewels we have covered. Over the past four weeks you may have turned up some other lovely gems too so add them into your notebook and make notes under them.
As we go over the 28 jewels keep the following in mind:
(a) Let go of what is no longer serving you - habits, ties to old wounds, negative relationships (drains), limiting beliefs, negative self talk.
(b) Ask yourself how you want to feel in your relationships, occupation, health/wellbeing/appearance, lifestyle, skills and learning, mind/body/spirit
connection, and then make it your intention to feel the way you want to feel in these areas.
(c) Decide to take small action steps daily to bring your life into alignment with these feelings in each area of your life.
So, to recap – and remember these jewels are to help you find your hopes, dreams, desires, purpose and gifts. At all times keep an open mind and a loving heart towards yourself.
MINING FOR JEWELS
1. BREATHE – One breath in, one breath out. You are centered, balanced. Where do you go to breathe? Sea/ forest/ hills/ park/ other?
2. CHOOSE – In every situation in life you have an opportunity to bring alignment with your values and desires. Exercise your right to choose. Choosing equals taking control.
3. INTENTION – Be the change you wish to see. Be the thing you wish to be. List your wishes hopes and dreams – what is your intention? 'Be-ing' brings everything into the present.
4. RESOURCES – Patience, resillience, enthusiasm, motivation etc. can be depleated over time. Go to the well. Allow yourself space to collect fresh supplies. Ask for support.
5. GRACE – That part of us that’s connected to the best of us. The magic that transforms a moment. Grace will lead you home. Namaste.
6. REFLECTIONS – “The world reflects back to you how much you value yourself.” D. LaPorte. Often the circumstances of your life is reflecting what you expect and how your behave.
7. BLESSINGS – Count your blessings! A blessing can reveal to you hidden depths you may never have realised you possessed. Someone or thing that leads to something new or unexpected, opening up new pathways and possibilities.
8. GRATITUDE – The more you focus on how much delight you have in your life the more and more, and more again you discover. Find the things that make you feel grateful and write them down daily. Soon you'll see 'reasons to be cheerful' everywhere.
9. DREAMS - Rest for minds, sleep for body, dreams for spirit. Make a note of your dreams – you never know where they will lead you. Some of the greatest inventions were dreamed of in sleep before coming into existence.
10. INSPIRATION – The magic ingredient to drawing out the bold, brilliant, beautiful expression of your inner spirit. It fills you with enthusiasm and creative expression. Who and what inspires you? Where is inspiration most likely to lead you?
11. NOW – Is all there is. Seize the day by seizing the moment. Make what you do right now, something you love. It’s time for a change and there’s no time like the present.
12. ENERGY – You are responsible for the energy you bring to this room. What energy or ‘vibe’ do you intend or choose to bring? Be it!
13. LIGHT – Your guiding light, your north star, is within you. Be delighted, lighten up, be the light for others and be lit up.
14. RELEASE – Give up and let go of: limiting beliefs, worrying about the future, the need to impress others, complaining, negative self talk, the need to always be right, resistance to change, blaming others, the need for the approval of others.
15. THRIVE – Your body: healthy eating, sleep, exercise and self-care. Your mind: Stay open to new possibilities and keep a thriving, positive mindset. Surround yourself with others who have a thrive mindset. Your spirit: Believe you are more than your physical presence. Your life has purpose and you are connected to a higher source.
16. SEASONS – There is no real beginning or ending – just advancing. Everythins is growth, even rest. There is a time for everything. Each experience opens up new opportunities for new springtimes at any stage in life.
17. MAGIC – When a flash of brilliance or inspiration strikes , trust in your instinct or intuition, have faith in your own internal guidance and proceed in certainty of your ability to see this through. Then stand back and watch the magic unfold.
18. BEAUTY – It is the revelation of the essence of a person. When someone shows their courage, passion, goodness, talents, gifts, wisdom, power, joy, their life lived on purpose – they reveal their beauty. Being more you is to bring more beauty into the world.
19. QUEEN – What are you the queen of and where is your realm? What makes you hold your head higher and walk in confidence knowing that you are in your most perfect element.
20. WORDS – Abracadabra ‘I create as I speak’. One word can change the world forever. Be aware of how you speak to yourself. Create possitive affirmations and repeat them daily. What follows ‘I am’ and ‘I can’ is coming to you.
21. CONNECTION – Feeling connected is one of the pillars of good mental health. Know how you want to feel, what do you want others to do in support of that and then communicate it. Reconnect with old friends or make new connections. You never know where it might lead.
22. SHINE – ‘Don’t die with you music still inside you’. Embrace your weird. The bit of us we worry might be too quirky and unusual - that’s the good bit. It’s never too late to shine. Begin today.
23. SACRED SPACE OR SANCTUARY - Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again. Somewhere to breathe deeply and create a positive vision for your life. Claim it……it’s waiting for you.
24. PURPOSE – Your purpose is something you bring forth or give to the world and is closely linked to your unique gift. The Dali Lama says the purpose of life is to be happy. Follow your heart. Do all the things that make you happy. That lifts your spirits. That gives you butterflies. That you jump out of bed in the morning to get to.
25. TRIBE – Who are the people you identify with. Who ‘get you’. We are the average of the five people we spend most time with. Identify your supporters. List the ‘Dream Team’ – all of the people you connect with daily, weekly, regularly. List clubs, groups, activities you want to be a part of. What can you bring to these?
26. PLEASURE –The experience of pleasure is so natural and organic that our very bodies are programmed to grow, repair and thrive on pleasure. So live in pleasure deliberately, dance, move, sleep, savour, laugh, touch, connect, absorb, give, receive, create and prioritise pleasure every day.
27. EXPERIENCE – What has experience taught you? What are the wisdoms you’ve gained from living your life? What do you know for sure? Do you live the wisdom of your experience?
28. HEALING – Knowing you are in control of your own wellness is the foundation of good helath in mind and body. Create an ‘owner’s manual’ on staying well. Make time daily for meditation, affirmations, breathing deeply and centering. Laugh, rest, nourish, create, connect, take decisive action, express gratitude. Love yourself. Forgive yourself. Banish shame and guilt.
The purpose of these jewels is to help you identify and focus on the very gift that is your life and all you have brought to it. So now that the month is almost over, it’s time to stop mining and start embellishing the fabric of your life with the gems and insight and wisdom you have unearthed.
I look forward to catching up with you again tomorrow.

DAY 30
Today’s jewel is PROMISES - so a cluster of jewels really.
Throughout January, you've taken a look inside and seen your wishes, hopes and dreams all twinkling back at you.
And hopefully you've discovered your heart's desire - your purpose right? (Not to worry if you haven't - you'll get there. These things can take patience, understanding and time for self-care).
Now we make plans.
This way lies happiness - For the Dali Lama says it's your duty to find your happiness.
Time to make promises to yourself and set intentions. Because intention is the power behind action and manifesting all you wish to bring into reality.
Put them on the calendar/planner
Invest in a beautiful new planner. There are some gorgeous whole-life approach planners available which include space for affirmation, ideas and inspirational notes, gratitude, motivational quotes etc. I use a beautiful daily one from Danielle LaPorte but the Happiness Planner and other similar ones are popular too.
So you've declared your intentions. That's the biggie. Now let's break down this journey of 1,000 steps into one and two and ten steps at a time. Manageable, not-scary-at-all, I've got this, steps.
So how do you begin? Start your research. This bit is quite exciting really. You get to read up and find out and download etc. without sticking your neck out of your shell at all. But crucially, you're following through on your intention.
At this point you can check out clubs, sign up for an online course, read up on a new holiday destination, listen to motivational podcasts or TED talks from people who paint/ write/ bake/ walk/ debate/ speak etc Find out how you can learn to dance/act/sing/play music. Watch Youtube videos of others who do what you love. Join facebook groups of like-minded people. Join a conservation society/book club / supper club etc.
Now follow through - share what you know with the world. Write a gardening blog / antique restoration blog / travels with my tent blog – don’t worry about the standard, you’re passion will shine through the words. Talk about what you're doing and share what you're learning with your family. All reinforcement of your intention and enlisting support and back-up.
PUT SELF-CARE ON YOUR PLANNER
Book a manicure or aromatherapy massage once a month. Book regular hair appointments and feel fabulous! Join a walking group/ yoga/pilates / tai-chi class. Once it's in the planner, it has to be carried out right? Remember to set yourself up to feel good because feeling good is the whole point.
Make sure that when you fill your planner with all the wonderful things you want to do for yourself that you balance giving and receiving, fun and duties, artistic/creative with practical, exploring and adventuring and spending time in your sacntuary or sacred space.
SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS
Set a morning routine of short meditation, journaling, exercise, affirmation etc. - more back up.
Set a nightime routine of putting away devices (out of your bedroom entirely - an enormous act of self-care unless you have kids staying out late, then do what you must to sleep easy!) Have warm bath/shower, drink a night time herbal tea, a little light reading, soft relaxation music, a short gratitude journal, recite a night time affirmation. Send your worries or needs to the universe and let them go. So often you will waken with the answer you need in the morning.
Today is just the beginning. It’s time to bring all the wonderful aspects of you, your strengths, your beauty, your inspiration, your light, your choices, your wisdom and your gifts into your everyday life.
Write out this promise declaration on the first page of your new planner - Or in your sparkly jewels notebook.
All your 'one day' promises are now being brought into the light. But before you do anything else, it's time to promise yourself that you are backing and supporting your wonderful new mindset. Here is a Promise to self. Let's begin here.
I ____________________________________,
Promise to notice the child in me. To pay attention and to make time to have fun.
Promise to take care of myself. To rest and to ask for support when I need help or advice.
Promise to affirm that I am a perfect and divine being worthy of love and respect.
Promise to forgive myself and shed the burden of shame and guilt.
Promise to keep an open mind and be prepared to expand and evolve.
Promise to speak kindly and with compassion to myself.
Promise to live my life for me and not for how others might see me.
Promise to let go of any relationship that shrinks, belittles or demeans me.
Promise to celebrate my achievements and successes no matter how small.
Promise to expect the best and to meet the universe halfway.
Promise to tell fear that I appreciate it loooking out for me but it needs to take a back seat.
Promise to remember …………………………
I am of the stars and I leave sparkles in my wake.
Hibernation is almost over for another year. Time to stretch and get ready for a whole new kind of year.
Oh what have we begun!!!

DAY 31
And here we are. The last day of your month of jewels!
There's a blue moon tonight (January 31st 2018), and a super moon and a lunar eclipse. A trifecta so rare, they say the last one occurred in 1866!
So take this moment, this day, and this auspicious event and CELEBRATE your final day of mining for the jewels within. And how perfectly timed is this? Here are some words about the moon tonight from astrologer Virginia Rosenberg -
"Crossing the threshold of this lunation, we can be more of who we really are. 'When we are hungry, we must become bread.' In other words, we can become what we seek. Humanity is asked to adapt, to evolve, and to become more of what it’s meant to be."
With that in mind I want to remind you to celebrate your life and your place in it every day. Celebrate your success and achievements no matter how small. Yes we are humble, yes we are modest but too often we hide our light and the real truth is that a rising tide lifts all ships. As you celebrate all the good things you are and you live, you give others permission to do the same.
It's time to be more of who you are so that everything around you can become more of what it's meant to be.
With this in mind I want to congratulate you and thank you for being a part of our mining expedition this January. I hope you're clear by now that every day is a new beginning and each month brings new opportunities.
Please remember dear Wise and Ageless Goddess that -
This is your life.
Yours to enjoy, to design,
to live, to be happy,
to get wet in the rain
and bathe in warm sunlight.
To laugh, rest, feel good, be excited.
To wish, to make wishes come true.
To learn, to guide, to explore,
to want, to receive,
to desire,to be desired.
To flourish and thrive and
to express your music inside.
To celebrate your successes and
to give your deepest thanks.
To enjoy every single moment
without care for the next.
This is your precious life.
Take action.
Be.
Thank you
I want to say thank you to so many people who have been supporting me throughout this month as we dug deep and shone light in dark corners. I especially want to thank Carol Dooley of Sunshine 106fm who is the most delightful ray of sunshine herself. Her programme runs daily from 2pm to 7pm. She also has a Saturday Live show from 11am to 1.00pm and Sunday from 3pm to 7pm on her Sunday Stress Busters. Carol is dedicated to bringing a positive and uplifting vibe to everyday and is definitely someone to have on your Dream Team. Download the Sunshine 106fm app to your phone and tap into her gorgeous energy regularly. Carol features an interview with me this coming Saturday, February 3rd to follow up on our chat about Jewels in January which she aired in late December.
Thanks to everyone who gave feedback and I'd love to hear more comments on how mining for jewels was for you on the UpStarts Facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/UpStarts-438815809650860/
Thanks to my very understanding family and especially to Alan who fed me coffee and checked for errors and mistakes each day.
My sister-in-law is sharing a precious bottle of vintage claret with me tonight and we will celebrate the lunar event and toast the awesome, majestic moon, symbol of womanhood. And we do what women have done for millennia when they get together - we will set the world to rights.
For tomorrow is the first of Spring. A whole new beginning.
Let's talk soon,
